Llamas at The Iron Horse Farm
During our adventures in purchasing our sheep we kept coming across llamas at many of the farms. They were majestic, peaceful beings. With a little mystic about them. Finally, we visited some friends who actually owned llamas and introduced theirs to us. They reminded me a lot of horses in some of their mannerisms.
Since buying our first three llamas we have purchased many fine animals. We currently have two wonderful herdsires. The first was Johnny Vegas, who is High Stetson's sire. Johnny went to his first show also in 1998, and took 1st Place in the Heavy Wool Yearling class. He went on to win Reserve Grand Champion overall! Johnny is a Rico De Bolivia son out of GDL Bonnie Brae. He is ½ Bolivian with plenty of fiber, massive bone and excellent conformation. His crias have been on the ground now for 4 years and are performing well in the show ring. In 2002 we were able to purchase RAR Chilean Magnet from the Jacksons in Pennsylvania. We have been admirers of Magnet since the beginning, and are thrilled that he is here producing fantastic crias! We are pleased to offer him to limited outside breedings. We have three generations of Magnet females here. It is a wonderful site to behold when they are pronking in the field together. We can't forget the females either! We thought long and hard when purchasing our females because we know they are half of the equation to beautiful, healthy and correct, stretchy animals. We have appaloosas with exotic faces with lots of ear fringe and presence like Katlin to the tall and athletic females like Phoebe, another appy. Willa is a lovely, big boned, heavy wool female who has been in the show ring. She has great presence and an adorable baby face. We also have Snowflake who is still growing, but has wonderful face wool and those nice banana ears. There is no greater satisfaction that watching a cria being born, a dam and her cria side by side or coming home after a long week-end at a show and feeling ever so proud! We owned our llamas for 2 years prior to beginning our breeding program, learning all the way. We put a lot of effort in to ensure healthy, happy animals. We have also started to show many of them. Showing has helped to broaden our knowledge base, as well as meeting new friends along the way. It is not just about winning, but also about enjoying our animals and having fun.We need to mention the wonderful fiber that these animals produce! We are breeding for fine, silky wool on our medium to heavy wool animals. Llama fiber is some of the finest fiber around. Much preparation is put into grooming the animals before shearing so that the fiber is free of as much vegetable matter and dirt as possible. Spinning llama alone or as a blend to make into that special gift is another great reason to own these fine animals. We shear our own animals and by appointment only will be glad to discuss shearing your llamas for you also. We sell our fiber and also do custom weaving and knitting of our fibers here at Iron Horse Farm and would love to help you design and purchase that special article. We welcome and encourage new owners to make an appointment and come spend some time with our animals. Education is very important prior to bringing your animals home! We want our buyers to feel comfortable with their new animals, knowing that we have answered all their questions and concerns. We want you to be equipped with the knowledge of our health management and farm philosophy to get you started. We are always available for after sale support. Many of our animals have gone to new homes to be companions, guards and some are in the show ring continuing the tradition. We would love to help you in your quest to find that special one.
